Top Five Spyware Threats to Internet Security

Spyware means any program that can change your computer system while gathering information about your activities while you are on the computer. The information is usually sent to the spyware creator via your internet connection without your knowledge. In order for it to work correctly, it must be able to run without the user shutting the computer down. Being hidden also helps the program to get installed in the first place. Because of this, spyware is usually disguised as a Trojan horse. This is a program that quietly runs in the background, inviting the user to run it, while spreading its malicious code. This code can do any number of things. It can start right away or it may simply install a program that won't start for sometime. Once it does start, it can delete all of the files on the computer or it can infect the computer and try to infect other computers on the network. There are a number of ways spyware is delivered, and as a Trojan horse is the most common. It usually comes with other pieces of software that a user might find interesting. This software is usually shared through a file-sharing network or downloadable off of the internet. Once the user installs the software, the spyware also gets installed.

How many spyware items are infecting your computer?

I just had, by mistake, a plug-in called Intelligent Explorer attach to my browser. What a nightmare! I have another article on this topic, but this brings home a point. Spyware or adware items are continually infecting computers. Most computers have no protection from them. Most frightening is the frequency of them. From the InfosecWriters web site, "According to a 2004 survey by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 91% of users questioned were familiar with the term spyware. Only 53% believed their computers were infected, but a scan found that 80% of their PCs had some type of spyware installed on them." It goes on to say, "…The average number of spyware components per computer was 93 with one computer having well over a thousand."

Professional Data Recovery Services

There are several data recovery software programs out there that are intended to assist you with recovering lost data. Even though they may be a big help with some cases, there are other times when they don't do anything. In the event of software programs not being able to recover your lost data, you can count on professional services to be there for you.

As we all know, the process of data recovery is very time consuming and requires quite a bit of technical prowess in order to recover the data that has been lost. If the recovery is performed in the wrong way, it can lead to the hard drive being damaged beyond repair, and quite possibly the information that was stored on the hard drive to be lost forever.

For many years, credit card fraud was rampant on the internet. Millions of dollars were fraudulently stolen from merchants and credit card companies. While many inroads have been made, there are still certain problems with fraud online.

Today many companies have stepped up and offered guarantees that if fraud occurs while you buy or sell a product, you are covered up to a certain limit. For most people this is great news. Not only does it help them limit their liability but also adds confidence to their online shopping habits. If you are either a buyer or merchant, here are ways you can shop and sell with confidence.

Something Doesn't Register : Cleaning your Computer's Registry for Safety

Each time you put new hardware or software on your system, or you reinstall programs or hardware on your system, information about that install is placed in your system's Registry. The system Registry is a log of everything that happens on the computer in terms of programs, services, and processes. Even if you follow all of the recommended steps to uninstall the software or hardware in the future, bits and pieces may be left behind in the Registry. It is essential that you clean your Registry because the redundant and useless entries can wreak havoc on your system's stability. They can slow the overall performance, and this can mean that you will have problems installing new software or hardware. Moreover, your computer is more likely to crash multiple times if you have never cleaned your registry. You are also more likely to encounter continuous error messages. Even if you clean up the bits and pieces programs leave behind after un-installation found in the "Program Files" folder, you still need to clean up the Registry keys and values. It is not a terribly difficult procedure. It is important, though, that you be very careful while cleaning. Deleting things from the Registry is permanent. It cannot be undone. If you delete something your system needs to run, you will be out of luck in terms of restarting your system.

Free Operating System

A free operating system is one that is available to the general public. It is software that can be used, copied, studied, modified, and redistributed with little or no restriction. Therefore, software is free if its source code (the human readable form of the software) is available with a software license that grants recipients these permissions or if the source code is in the public domain.

The concept of free software came about as a reaction by several people who felt that big companies like Microsoft were limiting the software market by making their programs available only for a fee. They felt that computer usage should be free for everyone. That includes the software that comes with the computers.
